AL-02 is a southeastern district in Alabama. It is 54.71% urban and includes most of the Montgomery metropolitan area as well as the southeastern part of the state. It has a population of 681,621, and 63.02% of the population is white.
The district is very Republican and has not supported a Democrat for president since Carter in 1976. It elected a Democrat to Congress in 2008 for the first time in 44 years, but it returned to voting Republican in 2010.
The candidates running in this district are Tabitha Isner and Martha Roby. Isner is the Democratic candidate who defeated Audri Scott Williams in the Democratic primary. She has worked in higher education, a refugee settlement agency, and as a researcher and policy maker in early childhood education. Roby is the Republican incumbent who was first elected to the House in 2010. She won the Republication nomination against former representative Bobby Bright. She also worked as an attorney and served as a city councilman in her hometown, Montgomery.
