California’s 23rd district includes the southern San Joaquin Valley and Sierra Nevada, the Tehachapi Mountains, and the Northwestern portion of the Mojave District. It also includes the Sequoia National Park and National Forest. It has been represented by Republican Kevin McCarthy since 2013; prior to redistricting, he represented the 22nd district from 2007 to 2013. He is the current House Majority Leader (the #2 Republican in the House). He is being challenged by Democrat Tatianna Matta. In this district, Obama received 37.0% of the two-party vote in 2012, the Democratic House candidate received 25.2% of the two-party vote in 2014, Clinton received 38.3% of the two-party vote in 2015, and the Democratic House candidate received 30.8% of the two-party vote in 2016.
