Colorado's 5th district is 86.44% urban, consisting mainly of Colorado Springs and its suburbs. The district is almost entirely white (81.71%) with some hispanic residents (15.84%) and some Black residents (5.89%).


The Democratic candidate is Stephany Rose Spaulding, an associate professor at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.The Republican candidate and incumbent is Doug Lamborn, who has served as the district's representative since 2007, winning all of his elections since he started serving the district by at least 20 points.


This district votes reliably Republican, with the Republican presidential candidate receiving at least 15% more of the votes than the Democratic candidate in each of the last five elections. It voted in favor of Lamborn in 2016 by 31 points, and it supported Trump over Clinton by 24 points.
