This district sits in the Western Florida panhandle, bordered on two sides by Alabama. Its central attraction is Eglin Air Force Base, which stretches across three counties and employs 14,000 people in the area. FLA-1 is also home to many of Florida’s retired veterans, plus the heavily military communities of Navarre and Fort Walton Beach. Florida-1 is 76.6% white and 82% urban. It's Florida’s most Republican district, and also the 15th most Republican in the nation. Incumbent Matt Gaetz supports gun ownership and caused controversy over support of “stand your ground” laws after the death of Trayvon Martin. He won in 2016 with 69% of the vote, and his Republican successor won in 2014 with 70%. Democrat Jennifer Zimmerman is a Filipina-American pediatrician who is running against Gaetz on a platform of affordable health care and education reform. Cook gives this district a rating of R+22.
