District Profile Last Updated: Oct. 25, 2018, 8:30 a.m.

This district is made up of portions of Broward County, Miami-Dade, and Miami Beach along Florida’s southeastern coast. The district is 75.6% white and 38% Hispanic. The Democratic incumbent Debbie Wasserman Schultz has been the Florida 23’s congresswoman since January 2013 when she was redistricted from Florida 20. Wasserman Schultz was the chairperson of the DNC from 2011 to July 2016; she resigned after her emails leaked showing her bias toward Clinton during the primary. She supports gender equality, increasing access to higher education, and promoting clean, renewable energy. On Oct. 24, suspicious packages were sent to high profile Democratic leaders with the return address as Wasserman Schultz's office. The Republican candidate, Joe Kaufman, got a degree from the University of Maryland in Communications. He is anti-terrorism and wishes to represent the Jewish and Hispanic communities well. He disproves of the way his opponent, Wasserman Schultz, handled her role as DNC chairwoman and how he claims she has taken orders from the president. Obama won with 61.77% of the vote in 2012 and Hillary won with 63.36% of the vote in 2016.
