This district is located in south Florida and is completely contained within Miami-Dade County. It is 86.3% white and 72.7% Hispanic thanks to the significant Cuban population in Miami and specifically Little Habana. Republicnan incumbent Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is not seeking reelection which leaves the seat open for Donna Shalala (D) and Maria Elvira Salazar (R). Shalala is the former president of the University of Miami and and was Clinton’s Secretary of Health and Human Services. Her priorities include addressing climate change for the safety of Florida and taking “immediate action to reduce gun violence,” according to her website. Salazar was born and raised in Miami and works as a broadcast journalist. She has five Emmy awards for her work and is the only Spanish-language U.S. journalist to interview Fidel Castro. Her priorities include addressing climate change and repealing the Obamacare premiums that will threaten her community’s ability to afford health care. Obama won here with 53.37% of the vote in 2012 and Hillary won with 60.06% of the vote in 2016.
