The boundaries of Florida’s third district were redrawn in 2012, changing it from an intentionally gerrymandered majority African-American district to the 30% rural, mostly white, and more Republican district it is now. The district lies between Gainesville and Ocala in the North of Florida. Corrine Brown was the last Democrat, only woman, and only African American to win the district, with 63% of the vote in 2010. After the 2012 redistricting, the district flipped Republican and elected Ted Yoho with 64% of votes. Yoho is a member of the Tea Party Caucus and has an ‘A’ rating from the NRA, famously declaring that "The right to bear arms is a birthright." He is a veterinarian by training. Former schoolteacher and Democratic candidate Yvonne Hayes Hinson says she'll prioritize public education and the Affordable Care Act. Cook rates this district R+9.
