District Profile Last Updated: Oct. 5, 2018, 11:47 a.m.

Georgia’s second congressional district contains the southwest corner of the state, including the city of Columbus and part of the city of Macon. The district is somewhat rural, but is sprinkled with several urban and suburban areas around multiple notable towns and cities. Its population is just over half-black, making it a minority-majority district; the overall population is 672,244 (as of 2016). The district has swung during presidential elections (the district favored Obama in 2012 but favored Trump in 2016), but Democrat Sanford Bishop Jr. has consistently won all district elections dating back to 2000, with his last 3 reelections seeing him carry about 60% of the vote. Opposing him this year is Republican Herman West Jr. Both men, being African Americans, may appeal greatly to their constituents, but it is expected that this district will remain mostly Democrat.
