District Profile Last Updated: Oct. 5, 2018, 11:47 a.m.

Hawaii’s second district includes rural and suburban areas of Oahu and Honolulu and outside Oahu. It is 331 miles long and it’s economy is mainly based on tourism, ranching and agriculture, especially pineapple and sugarcane. This district is made up of 699,332 people, approximately 83.65% urban and 16.35% rural. The demographics are 29.8% White, 1.6% Black, 28.8% Asian, 9.0% Hispanic, 0.4% Native American, and 13.5% other. Similar to Hawaii’s first district, Hawaii-2 is heavily democratic, with a Democratic representative since 1970 and consistently voting for the Democratic presidential candidate every election. This election, Democratic incumbent Tulsi Gabbard is running against Republican candidate Brian Evans. Gabbard endorsed Bernie Sanders in the 2016 election, and has progressive social beliefs but more conservative views on war. She promotes same sex marriage, and believes the US, "should not draw us into an unwise war,” when talking about Syria. Not much is known about Brian Evan’s campaign as he ran unopposed in the Republican primary, but he ran in the Democratic primary in 2014 which implies he may want to be the representative no matter what party.
