Indiana's 5th congressional district is immediately to the north of Indianapolis, including the suburb of Carmel and more rural areas to the north. The district is fairly Republican, with Trump winning by 12 points in 2016. However, this district actually shifted left in 2016 compared to 2012, where Romney won the district by 17 points, which is surprising, given that Mike Pence was the governor of Indiana at the time.

Three-term Republican incumbent Susan Brooks is running for reelection against Democratic challenger Dee Thornton, a corporate executive.
