Iowa’s fourth congressional district is located in the northwestern part of the state. It is only 50% urban, 96% white and less than 1% black.
This district went for Romney in 2012 and Trump in 2016. This district is Iowa's most Republican leaning, having been under their control for over 2 decades. In recent elections the Republican incumbent has won this district by a margin greater than 20%.
The Democratic candidate is challenger JD Scholten. This election is Scholten’s first time running for political office. Scholten supports increased economic opportunity, supporting independent farms, supporting union rights, and increasing access to healthcare. 
The Republican incumbent is Steve King is running for his 8th term in congress. Steve King is a controversial figure do to his far right sympathies and numerous racist or racially charged comments.
