Maine’s first congressional district is located in the Southwestern part of the state and is about equal parts urban and rural. It includes Cumberland, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, and York counties and the majority of Kennebec county, and its major cities are Portland, Augusta, Brunswick, and Saco. Democrats have won every year in Maine’s first district since 2000, usually gaining between 55 and 65 percent of the vote. The current incumbent, Chellie Pingree has held her seat since 2008 and is running to defend her seat this election. Pingree was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1955 and graduated from College of the Atlantic with a degree in human ecology. She was a member of the Maine Senate from 1992 to 2000 and majority leader after 1996. She ran an unsuccessful campaign for United States Senate in 2002 and was CEO of Common Cause, an organization that advocates for issues like national popular vote and paper ballots, from 2003 to 2006. Pingree’s opponent Mark Holbrook  was born in Brunswick, Maine and received PhD in Psychology from Fielding Graduate University. Holbrook has worked in law enforcement and is a member for the NRA. He ran an unsuccessful campaign for the Maine House of Representatives in 2014 and for the United States House of Representatives in 2016.
