The third district of Maryland contains portions of Montgomery, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, and small parts of the city of Baltimore. The district has voted for the Democratic candidate in the last five presidential elections. Incumbent John Sarbanes (Democrat) is running against Charles Anthony (Republican). Sarbanes has been in office since 2007 and his father, Paul Sarbanes, was a Maryland Senator. Anthony is a retired US Army officer and also a retired employee from Walter Reed Army Medical Center. This is his first time running for public office.
