Massachusetts’ fifth district is in the eastern part of the state, mainly Middlesex County. The district has voted for Democratic representatives since 1975. In the past three presidential elections, the Democratic candidate had the majority vote, with Democrats receiving 66.2% in 2008, 65.2% in 2012, and 69.3% in 2016. The candidates running are the incumbent Katherine Clark (D), who has been serving as congresswoman since 2013, and John Hugo (R). Clark was born in Connecticut and was the chairwoman of the Melrose School Committee before election. Hugo is a Massachusetts native who previously ran for the state senate in 2000 but was not elected.
