Michigan’s first congressional district embodies the northernmost part of Michigan and includes areas from both Upper and Lower Peninsulas. The district is over 90% White. MI-01 has voted Democratic until 2011 and then started to consistently vote Republican. Dan Benishek won the 2012 and 2014 elections with 48% and 52% of the vote respectively. Jack Bergman won the 2016 election with 55% of the vote. The candidates running in this race are Bergman (R) and Matt Morgan (D). Bergman is a former Marine Corps lieutenant general (the highest ranked congressman ever) and was first elected in 2016. Morgan is also a Marine Corps veteran, serving in the Iraq war. He was kicked off the primary ballot but received almost 30,000 write-ins to be able to run in the general election. Our fundamental-only model predicts a Republican win.
