The 1st congressional district expands from South Dakota and Wisconsin’s border on the southern part of Minnesota. Although it has a strong history of agriculture due to its rural areas, this is changing due to the increasing population in Rochester. The cities included in this district are Rochester, Mankato, Winona, Austin, Owatonna, Albert Lea, New Ulm, and Worthington. The population is 90.25% White and around 637,000 people. The two candidates running  are Dan Feehan (D) and Jim Hagedorn (R). Dan Feehan is a former soldier, teacher, and a national security professional at the Pentagon. His main issues are supporting education and workforce development, agriculture, and national security. Jim Hagedorn’s father represented Minnesota’s 2nd congressional district in 1974. In 1984, Hagedorn was hired as the legislative assistance to Arlan Stangeland, Minnesota’s former Republican Congressman. His main issues regard repealing and replacing ObamaCare, supporting the 2nd amendment, increasing border security, and pro-life. Jim Hagedorn is running again, although he lost in both 2014 with 45.7% of the vote and 2016 with 49.6% of the vote to Tim Walz. However, Tim Walz is not running again, even though he was the incumbent since 2006.  Although Democrat Tim Walz has been in office for multiple terms, Donald Trump won the election with 53% of the vote. In the 2008 and 2012 presidential election, Barack Obama won both of the elections with a close margin: 51% in 2008 and 50% in 2012.
