The 5th congressional district covers Hennepin County and the entirety of Minneapolis, including parts of Anoka and Ramsey counties. The two candidates running are Ilhan Omar (D) and Jennifer Zielinski (R).  The population is 91.9% White and around 675,000 people. Ilhan Omar became the first Somali-American, Muslim legislator in the United States and was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in District 60B. Her missions includes guaranteeing access to public education, providing healthcare coverage for all, preventing gun violence, and investing in arts and humanities. Jennifer Zielinski is a Republican activist and works in health care. Her main issues are reducing the educational gap, continuing Trump’s tax law, and creating stricter laws for immigration. Keith Ellison (D) has been in office since 2006, but both candidates are running for the first time. The Democratic candidate in the presidential election won with at least 70% of the vote since 2004; Barack Obama won 74% of the vote in both 2008 and 2012, and Hillary Clinton won 74% of the vote.
