The 7th congressional district covers most of the westerns portions of Minnesota except the most southern part. It is Minnesota’s largest district and includes cities such as Moorhead, Fergus Falls, Alexandria, and Willmar. The population is 95.59% White and around 670,000 people. The two candidates running are Collin Peterson (D) and Dave Hughes (R). Collin Peterson was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1990. Peterson has publicly advocated for farmers and small business owners and a leader on the Farm Bills passed by Congress. Collin Peterson has been in office since 1988. The Republican candidate in the presidential elections won with at least 50% of the vote since 2000; Mitt Romney won 54% of the vote in 2012 and President Donald Trump won 62% of the vote in 2016.
