This district is located in Southern New Jersey and contains parts of eight different counties. In the congressional elections, the district has voted strongly Republican since 1994. In the past nine congressional elections, the Republican candidate has received at least 58% of the two-party vote. However, in the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections, the district voted Democratic for President Obama. The district is 79.10% urban. The district’s population is 75.4% Caucasian, 14.7% African American, 2.4% Asian, 10.3% Hispanic, 0.4% Native American, and 1.4% other. 
The open seat for this district was held previously by Republican Frank LoBiondo. He held the seat from 1994-2018. The Democratic candidate for this election is Jeff Van Drew. Van Drew is a dentist who has served as the senator for the 1st New Jersey district since 2008. As a senator, he represented May County, a red county, and voted moderately on several issues. For example, he voted against the gun control bills that were proposed after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Before serving as a senator, he was a part of the New Jersey General Assembly. The Republican candidate is Seth Grossman. His goals as a Congressman are to reduce legal immigration, repeal Obamacare, increase school security, and support President Trump. He was a member of the City Council and has worked with former Republican Bogota mayor, Steve Lonegan.
