New Jersey’s 5th district is the northernmost district in the state. This district contains parts of four counties: Bergen, Passaic, Sussex, Warren County. The counties are mostly Republican. Bergen County is said to have leaned Democratic in recent elections. However, the district contains the northern section of the county, which has a mostly Republican community. In the last congressional election, Republican incumbent of seven years, Scott Garrett, lost the seat to Josh Gottheimer, who received 52% of the two-party vote. It is 82.83% urban and its population is 89.3% Caucasian, 1.5% African American, 6.6% Asian, 4.5% Hispanic, 0.2% Native American, and 0.2% other.
The Democratic incumbent for this district is Josh Gottheimer. He was a speechwriter for Bill Clinton and has been a presidential campaign advisor for Wesley Clark, John Kerry, and Hillary Clinton.
