New York’s 1st district is 78% White and 13% Hispanic, and includes a large variety of people ranging from very wealthy to rural farmers. The district’s house position was held by Democrats from 2002 until 2014, when Republicans took over. In 2014 and 2016, Republican Lee Zeldin won 54.5% and 58.2% of the two-party vote, respectively. The Republican candidate is incumbent Lee Zeldin, who also works as a lawyer. The Democratic candidate is Perry Gershon, a businessman.
