New York’s 3rd district includes most of the North Shore of Long Island. Demographically, it is 67% white, 16% Asian, and 11% Hispanic. The district has mostly voted for Democratic presidents. Congressionally, the district voted Republican until 2012, since electing two different Democratic candidates. Steve Israel held the seat for two terms with 58.2% of the vote in 2012 and 52.6% of the vote in 2014. In the 2016 election, Tom Suozzi ran and won with 53% of the vote. The Democratic candidate is incumbent Tom Suozzi, politician and mayor. The Republican candidate is Dan Debono, a former Navy SEAL.
