New York’s 7th district was drawn to connect communities with large percentages of minority voters. It is approximately 39% Hispanic, 26% White, 19% Asian, and 11% Black. The district has historically voted in favor of the Democrats in both presidential and house elections. The Democratic candidate and incumbent, Nydia Velázquez, is the first Puerto Rican woman to be elected to Congress, and has served on the House of Representatives since 1993. She won an overwhelming 82.6% of the vote in the 2014 house election and 90.8% in 2016. There is no Republican candidate, but Joseph Lieberman is running from the Conservative Party and Jeffrey Kurzon is running from the Reform Party.
