New York’s 9th district is located entirely within Brooklyn and is nearly 50% African American. This area has been represented by Democrats for decades. It voted 85% and 84% Democratic in the presidential elections in 2012 and 2016, respectively. As of now, the representative for the district is Democrat Yvette Clarke, who has held the position since 2007 and before that was on the New York City Council for 6 years. She won in 2014 with 81% of the vote and in 2016 with 92%. Her Republican candidate for this election is socially liberal Lutchi Gayot, a small business owner and the son of Haitian immigrants.
