North Carolina’s first congressional district covers the northeastern corner of the state, which includes the state’s fourth most populous city of Durham. 32.72% of the district’s population identifies as non-Hispanic white, 27.7% of the population holds at least a bachelor’s degree, and the median household income is $40,895. The district has historically voted consistently Democratic since 1888. Most recently, 68.88% of the vote went to Clinton in the 2016 presidential election. Former North Carolina Supreme Court judge G.K. Butterfield has been the incumbent representative since 2005, and is once again running this year. His opponent is Republican Roger Allison, a sales and businessman.
