North Carolina’s second congressional district is located in the central and eastern portions of the state, and covers a primarily suburban area. 64.51% of the district’s population identifies as non-Hispanic white, 36.2% of the population holds at least a bachelor’s degree, and the median household income is $65,792. In recent years, the district was reliably Democratic until 2010, when Renee Elmer was elected to the House. Since then, the Republican candidate has prevailed, with the Democratic candidate winning 43.43% and 45.04% of votes in the 2012 and 2016 presidential elections, respectively. Democratic candidate and former of North Carolina House Representative Linda Coleman is running against Republican incumbent and U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina George Holding.
