North Carolina’s second congressional district is located in the central and eastern portions of the state, and covers a primarily suburban area. 64.51% of the district’s population identifies as non-Hispanic white, 36.2% of the population holds at least a bachelor’s degree, and the median household income is $65,792. In recent years, the district was reliably Democratic until 2010, when Renee Elmer was elected to the House. Since then, the Republican candidate has prevailed, with the Democratic candidate winning 43.43% and 45.04% of votes in the 2012 and 2016 presidential elections, respectively.
