North Carolina's ninth congressional district covers the south-central portion of the state, including Union and Anson counties. Since 1962, this district has voted consistently Republican. The previous incumbent, Robert Pittenger, lost the Republican primary to Mark Harris, a politician and pastor. His opponent is Democratic candidate Dan McCready, a Marine Corp veteran and a small business owner.
