Ohio’s 1st congressional district is a highly urban district located in Southwestern Ohio, and bordering Kentucky and Indiana. It includes a large amount of Cincinnati and many of its suburbs. Since 1994, Steve Chabot, a Republican, has won every election except for 2008, usually winning between 50 and 65% of the vote. He is currently running to defend it again. Chabot was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1953 and graduated from Northern Kentucky University with a Juris Doctor from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law. He was an elementary school teacher from 1975 to 1976, and he was a member of the Cincinnati City Council from 1985 to 1991. Chabot has voted almost perfectly inline with the Republican Party over his career and has recently supported Republican attempts to repeal the affordable care act. Chabot’s opponent Aftab Pureval was born in Ohio, attended Ohio State University, where he obtained a degree in political science, and earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Cincinnati College of Law. Pureval has worked with the law firms Procter & Gamble, and White & Chase LLP and was the Hamilton County Clerk of Courts. Pureval opposes the GOP tax plan and instead supports a plan that would do more to relieve middle class tax burden.
