District Profile Last Updated: Oct. 5, 2018, 11:47 a.m.

This coastal congressional district encompasses major tourist destinations along the coast that attract retirees and seasonal visitors and has not had a Democratic Representative since 1981. Historically, this district has voted  strictly Republican since the late 20th century, including the 2016 election; Trump won the district by 56.98%. The district is 74.8% white and 23.1% urban. Republican Katie Arrington defeated incumbent Mark Sanford in the GOP primaries. Her campaign platform highlighted growing the economy, improving transportation, and upholding the Constitution. Her Democratic opponent is Joe Cunningham, who is a construction law attorney, co-owner of a yoga studio with his wife, and a former ocean engineer. Cunningham considers himself as a moderate; he supports some gun reform and abortion rights and is opposed to oil drilling or seismic testing off of South Carolina’s coast and abolishing ICE.
