This district is located in the central and southwestern South Carolina, spanning from Columbia to the Georgia border. Historically, this district has voted strictly Republican since the late 20th century, including the 2016 election; Trump won the district by 56.33%. The population is 69.5% white and 12.4% urban. The Republican incumbent Joe Wilson is the Assistant Republican Whip and has been in office since 2001. Most of his political views align with President Trump’s and is an advocate for Trump’s stances. His Democratic opponent is Sean Carrigan, who is a realtor and is a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. Carrigan fully supports the LGBTQ community and women’s rights and wants a reform in the criminal justice system. He also advocates for gun control and medical cannabis.
