This rural district borders Georgia and North Carolina and Republicans dominate the politics at all levels. In the 2016 presidential election, Trump won the district by 69.79%; the population is 76.9% white. The Republican incumbent is Jeff Duncan, who has worked as a real estate broker and auctioneer, and has been in office since 2011. Duncan is pro-life, supports gun rights, and cosponsored legislation to repeal a large portion of taxes, namely income and estate. He also supports the repeal of Obamacare and opposes a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. His Democratic opponent is Mary Geren, who is a college instructor. Geren is committed to ensuring that people have access to a quality education, affordable healthcare, and the ability to provide for their family. She also advocates for universal background checks for guns and wants to expand voting registration.
