Tennessee’s second congressional district is situated in the north-eastern portion of the state. According to the census, the district is 74.15% urban and 25.85% rural. It is a primarily White district. This district has strongly voted Republican in the past three elections. In the 2012 presidential election, the Republicans of this district won approximately 70% of the two-party vote. In the 2014 house election, the Republicans won 77% of the two-party vote. In the 2016 presidential election, the Republicans won 70% of the two-party vote. In the house election, they won 75% of the two-party vote. Currently, Democratic representative, Renee Hoyos, and Republican representative, Tim Burchett, are running for this district’s open seat. Hoyos has been executive director of the Tennessee Clean Water Network since 2003. Burchett has served two terms as mayor of Knox County.
