Tennessee’s fourth congressional district is located in the southern portion of the state. According to the census, the district is 56.16% urban and 43.84% rural. It is a primarily White district. This district has strongly voted Republican in the past three elections. In the 2012 presidential election, the Republicans of this district won approximately 67% of the two-party vote. In the 2014 house election, the Republicans won 63% of the two-party vote. In the 2016 presidential election, the Republicans won 71% of the two-party vote. In the house election, they won 65% of the two-party vote. Currently, Republican incumbent, Scott DesJarlais, and Democratic representative, Mariah Phillips, are running for this seat. DesJarlais has been this district’s representative since 2011. Phillips is a teacher and has worked with community organizations.
