Texas’ 1st congressional district is in the northeast of Texas. It is 56.8% urban, 62.83% white, and 17.37% hispanic. The Republican incumbent, Louie Gohmert, has been in office since 2005, and is a part of the Tea Party movement. He has won reelection with 60% or more of the vote share in every election since 2006. The Democratic candidate, Shirley McKellar, has worked in education, nursing, and the military. The district has consistently voted for Republican presidential nominees since 2000.
