Texas’ 34th congressional district is a tall sliver of the southern coast. It is 83.96% urban, 3.41% white, and 83.88% hispanic. The Democratic incumbent, Filemon Vela Jr, has been in office since 2013, and practiced law as a plaintiff attorney for more than twenty years. The Republican challenger, Rey Gonzalez, served in the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary and reached the rank of Captain. In the 2012 Presidential election, Obama won 61.35% of the district's two party vote. 2014 the House race Democratic candidate won 60.65% of the vote. In the 2016 Presidential election Clinton won 61.09% of the two party vote. 2016's House race the Democratic candidate won 62.7% of the two party vote.
