West Virginia’s 3rd congressional district lines in the southern part of the state, bordering Kentucky and Virginia, and includes cities like Huntington. West Virginia’s congressional districts are divided completely along county lines. Mountains run through this district, especially in its eastern portions. This district has typically voted Democrat since 2000 but flipped in 2014 and is currently held by Evan Jenkins of Huntington. Democrat Nick Rahall was able to win seven times from 2000 to 2012, consistently capturing 55% or more of the vote. However, he was defeated as an incumbent in 2014. Richard Ojeda (D) is running against Carol Miller (R) in 2018. Ojeda enlisted in the US Army and graduated from West Virginia State College. Major Ojeda retired from the Army in 2013. Miller studied history and political science at Columbia. She ran for the West Virginia House of Delegates in 2004 but was not elected.
