Wisconsin’s first district is the most southeastern district of Wisconsin. It shares a border with Lake Michigan. The district is approximately, 85% White, 5% Black, and 8% Hispanic. The District is 84% urban. Although it has consistently elected a Republican representative since 1995, it has swung between the Democratic nominee and the Republican nominee on Presidential Elections. In the past five Presidential Elections, this District voted thrice for the Republican candidate and twice for the Democratic candidate. In 2008 they voted for Obama winning 50.8% of the vote, but lost in 2012 when Romney won 51.2% of the vote. Most recently, they voted for Donald Trump with 52.6% of the vote and the Republican nominee, Speaker Paul Ryan, won with 65% of the vote. Ryan has announced that he will not participate in this year’s midterms. Taking on the reins this year of the District’s Republican party, Bryan Steil, a University of Wisconsin Regent. Running on essentially a photocopy of the Republican platform with a special focus toward the workforce, Steil has earned the endorsement of President Donald Trump. Racing against him is Democrat, and US Army Veteran, Randy Bryce. Bryce’s platform appeals the the middle class, pointing out their misrepresentation. Bryce, even with arrests (most recently for protesting Paul Ryan), earned the endorsements of Democratic politicians and several labor unions such as the AFL-CIO and the United Auto Workers.
