Wisconsin’s fifth district contains the northern and western suburbs of Milwaukee. It is 85% urban and 15% rural. The population is 95% White, 2% Asian, 1% Black, and 1% Hispanic. It is considered to be the most Republican District in Wisconsin which is evidenced by the victories of the Republican presidential candidates in the District since 2004, McCain winning 57.2% of the vote in 2008, Romney with 61.3% in 2012, and most recently Donald Trump winning with 57.4% of the vote in 2016. The Republican incumbent, Jim Sensenbrenner, who won reelection in 2016 with 66.8% of the vote, has served this District since 2003, when District 9 was incorporated into District 5. Sensenbrenner has comfortably won all his races since. Sensenbrenner currently serves in the Committee of the Judiciary. Challenging him this year is Tom Palzewicz, a Democrat Navy veteran. Palzewicz is running on a shadow of the Democratic Party’s platform earning him the endorsements of Democrats such as Liz Warren and Martin O’Malley, but also labor unions such as the AFL-CIO, and the United Steel Workers.
